MARY MOOMY KUMAH - GOSPEL MUSICIAN For many gospel musicians, ministry and music go hand in hand. But behind the inspiration and uplifting songs are struggles many people never see. Ghanaian gospel musician Mary Mommy Kumah has opened up about the financial challenges she has faced throughout her 15-year journey in music.
Mary Mommy Kumah, who hails from Kumdi in the Kpandai District of the Oti Region, revealed in an interview with Nchumuru Media TV that despite spending 15 years in the gospel music industry, she has released only three songs.
According to her, every release has come with financial loss rather than profit. She explained that she spends more than ¢2,000 on studio recording sessions, event organization, and promotions whenever she releases a song. However, the returns from the launches usually range between only ¢500 and ¢1,000.
The poor turnout at events and low financial support from audiences have made it difficult for her to recover the money invested in her music career.
Despite the frustration, Mary says she remains committed to her calling. For her, the impact of the music matters more than the money. She shared that hearing people testify about how her songs helped them through difficult moments gives her the strength to continue.
“Even though the money may not come, hearing people say my music saved or encouraged them during hard times fills my heart with joy,” she said.
Mary Mommy Kumah’s story reflects the reality many independent gospel musicians face in Ghana — pouring their hearts, time, and finances into music ministry while receiving very little financial reward in return. Yet, through the struggles, her passion to inspire lives through gospel music remains unshaken.
